Let’s talk about zoning. There are lots of ways to do that as we hear about, “zoning out”, “being in the zone”, finding your zone of genius, the “green” zone being the place we are most calm and centred, being in the creative zone. In all cases being in the zone generally refers to a mental state. Sometimes we can “get into the zone”, and quite often we don’t stay there. One might also think of it as getting into out of alignment, or in and out of balance. In this article, we’ll focus more on getting in the zone.
Getting in the Zone
Focusing your attention on what you are doing and how you are being in the present moment provides a clearer sense of direction when you know the outcome you are trying to achieve.
Of course focusing requires a certain level of concentration. Eliminate distractions and create a conducive environment for your task. Find a quiet space, turn off notifications on your electronic devices, and minimize interruptions. This allows you to concentrate fully on the activity at hand.
It’s also good to know the level of skill required for what you are doing and trying to achieve. You’ll likely end up feeling bored if it seems to easy and tedious, and overwhelmed when you start doubting your abilities to achieve what you are trying to accomplish and give up when it feels “too hard”. Simplify what you are doing, and be clear about your intentions and motivations so you can stay aligned with your ultimate goal this current action is leading to.
Motivation, Reflection, Mindfulness, Performance
Leave some time for reflection so you can assess how engaged you are vs. how obsessed you might be about the project you are working on. This gives a clue to what you motivation and intention actually is. When you are driven to succeed, is there an underlying need that you are fulfilling? For example, is it possible you are seeking approval or acceptance? Are you trying to prove something (to yourself or to others)? What are reasons why you want to achieve this goal? Giving yourself time for reflection amidst all the action ensures you stay true to yourself and in your zone of genius.
It’s also important to relax and ease up on the pressure you might be putting on yourself. Soften into the space you are in, especially if you notice your jaw is tight, your body is rigid with determination, your breathing is shallow. Softening also allows you to become more receptive to new ideas, innovation solutions, and inspiration. This in turn creates a deeper connection with yourself and your work, and gives more meaning to what you express through that.
One way to do that is through mindfulness techniques. Techniques such as meditation and deep breathing exercises can help quiet the mind, increase self-awareness, and improve concentration. Mindfulness practices can also help you let go of distractions and stay present in the moment.
Passion and Mastery: Entering Your Flow State
Pursue activities that genuinely interest and motivate you. When you have a strong passion for what you’re doing, it becomes easier to enter a state of flow and maintain it for an extended period.
Developing expertise in a particular area can increase the likelihood of entering the zone. This is where you get to develop self-mastery, and mastery over what you practicing. It breeds familiarity and you become more comfortable with what you are doing and find more ease and grace in it. It starts to feel very natural.
How do you know when you get into your zone?
You know you got into your zone when you feel fully immersed in an activity, feeling energized, focused, and experiencing a heightened sense of performance and enjoyment. In other words, being in “flow”.
One thing to be aware of is that it takes time and practice to find the optimal conditions that help you get in the zone consistently. You don’t always need to know where you are going. It’s enough to know we are on your way. As poet and mystic Rumi says, “Start on the way and the way appears”. Walk it with integrity and you’ll be in your zone every step of the way.
